ABOUT

We wanted to create a 3+ season ultralight puffy with one of the highest warmth-to-weight ratios on the market, while still offering a full feature set including a full-length zip, adjustable hood and zippered hand pockets, all at an unrivalled price point for a jacket of this spec.

This efficiency comes from 950+ Fill Power Ultrasonic Muscovy down, an ultralight yet durable 7D ripstop nylon shell, and carefully designed baffle sizing and placement. The result is the Barrington Down Hoody.

BAFFLE FREQUENCY

These days, it's extremely common to see down jackets with a million tiny baffles. This has been a byproduct of the outdoor industry pursuing fashion and style, over actual functionality and warmth.

In order for a down product to actually be warm, it needs to loft. The higher the loft height, the warmer that down piece will be. By creating too many sew-lines and too many baffles, the down itself is not given a chance to fully loft.

Through our infrequent sew-lines, we create less baffles all throughout our hoody. This, in turn, allows for each baffle to fully loft to their max peak loft height, thus achieving a much higher amount of warmth for the same/less weight.

However, there is a fine balance of taking this too far (down begins to shift when the baffles are too wide). But we've found a sweet spot between down density and loft, so that you you can stay toasty warm (much warmer with other jackets at the same total weight), while having your down hoody weigh next to nothing!

HOOD DESIGN

When we were designing our hood, we wanted a hood that would actually...work. This meant designing a hood that could actually cinch all the way shut (balaclava style). We've found that a balaclava style hood provides the maximum amount of warmth for an area where there is often dramatic heat loss (neck and head).

You're able to cinch the hood down to pretty much just your nostrils, which allows the hood to act as the perfect head insulation for any quilt users out there. However, when not cinched, the hood provides a relaxed fit that feels just right.

For seamless operation, we’ve also placed flat-button cord locks on the exterior, ensuring the adjustment system is always accessible and easy to operate, even with gloves on.

950+FP Ultrasonic Muscovy Down™

Our 950+ Fill Power Ultrasonic Muscovy Down™ by SOFTIE combines premium natural Muscovy down with SOFTIE’s proprietary, patented ultrasonic processing technology.

Unlike conventional mechanical washing, SOFTIE’s process uses high-frequency ultrasonic energy during cleaning to more effectively remove impurities while minimising unnecessary stress on the delicate down clusters. This helps preserve their natural integrity and allows the down to achieve exceptional loft, cleanliness and consistency.

The result is an exceptionally clean, high-performance natural insulation reaching 950+ fill power, delivering outstanding warmth for its weight while reducing residual odour and supporting long-term loft and performance.

Beyond its high loft, Muscovy Down has a superior rebound rate compared to both standard duck and goose down. While high-fill-power goose down can sometimes be slow to "re-loft" after being compressed in a stuff sack, the resilient architecture of Muscovy clusters allows them to spring back to maximum volume almost instantly. This rapid expansion minimizes the "cold window" typically experienced when transitioning gear from a pack to the body.

FAQ

That price tag is not a typo; we are well aware that down jackets with these specs usually come in at more than 2x the price.
Affordability is one of our core principles. We know how expensive outdoor gear (especially premium ultralight equipment) can be, and we believe more people should have access to high-quality gear without paying excessive markups.
Our goal isn’t to maximize profits, but to follow a more thoughtful and ethical pricing approach. That said, affordability never comes at the expense of quality. We design every product to meet the highest standards first, and only then do we determine how to price it as fairly as possible.
In fact, our down products are manufactured by one of the world’s leading down factories, the same trusted partners used by brands like Sea to Summit, Columbia, and Mammut.
So how do we keep our prices accessible?
Direct-to-consumer model
By cutting out the "middleman," we bypass the traditional retail supply chain that typically inflates prices. Most outdoor brands sell to wholesalers, who then sell to big-box retailers (a process where every hand the product touches adds another layer of markup). By shipping directly from our door to yours, we eliminate these retail margins. This allows us to offer premium materials and high-end construction at a fraction of the market rate. We do stock our products at a few retailers, but we do limit this so that we can make sure pricing stays affordable to you.
Overseas production
We partner with world-class manufacturing facilities that specialise specifically in technical down insulation. These are the same industry-leading factories used by global brands like Sea to Summit and Mammut, offering a level of precision and expertise that is difficult to find elsewhere. Producing overseas allows us to leverage these highly efficient, specialised production lines and advanced sourcing networks. By streamlining the manufacturing process in a region with deep expertise in technical apparel, we significantly reduce production costs without compromising a single stitch of performance. We then pass those direct savings straight back to you.
Lean operations
We’ve chosen to keep our team small, local, and highly specialized. By maintaining an agile operation, we avoid the heavy overhead and complex layers of management often found in larger organizations. This "lean" structure allows us to move quickly and stay deeply connected to our products. We prefer to spend our time in the design studio or out in the field testing prototypes, keeping our focus exactly where it belongs: on building the best possible equipment for you.

In-house marketing
We also keep our marketing internally. In fact, our photos we've taken for marketing are by our lead product designer on one of his weekend trips. And our very photogenic models are all close friends of ours!
This jacket is a high-performance 3+ season layer, comfortable down to freezing. We’ve added the “+” because its unique, infrequent baffle design traps more heat than other jackets in its weight class, making it significantly warmer than typical 3-season puffies.
However, please note that it is not a dedicated winter expedition parka. For extreme conditions, such as the depths of an Alaskan winter, we highly recommend a jacket with a much higher fill weight.
Our 7-denier ripstop nylon is exceptionally strong for its weight! It shines as the perfect ultralight fabric for a static insulation piece, and can be subject to mild-active use as well.
However, we really don't recommend that you wear this as a layer to bushbash overgrown trails.
This is an ultralight fabric after all, and there needs to be some tradeoffs to get one of the highest warmth-to-weight ratios commercially available on the market.
Zippered Hand Pockets: We’ve included these by popular demand; while they add a little weight, the added security for your essentials is a must-have for most.

Pre-elasticated Cuffs & Hems: To offset the pocket weight, we used streamlined, pre-elasticated hems and cuffs. These are precision-sized to provide a comfortable, reliable fit for almost everyone without adding unnecessary bulk.
You can.
However, we don't recommend this as down isn't the ideal or most breathable insulation for active use.
Additionally, when down feathers become wet, they clump together and lose their "loft" (fluffiness), destroying their ability to trap air and provide warmth. In active scenarios, sweat can easily soak the down from the inside, while rainy or humid conditions can soak it from the outside.
We would recommend using a synthetic layer as an active insulation layer. Our personal preference, a Polartec Alpha fleece paired with a wind shell.
If you're in between sizes, we recommend sizing up. If you're in a down hoody that is too small, you run the risk of compressing the down's loft from the inside. This, in turn, will result in a colder overall experience.
Fill power measures the fluffiness and insulation quality of down, indicating how many cubic inches one ounce of down occupies. A higher number means larger, better-quality clusters that trap more heat while being lighter and more compressible.
At 950+FP, you're looking at one of the highest available fill powers on the market. This means a puffy that is extremely warm for its weight, and will pack down to almost nothing.
We opted against hydrophobic down to prioritize the hoody’s warmth-to-weight ratio. Historically, hydrophobic treatments degraded down quality, and even with today's impressive advancements, they can still compromise maximum fill power. Because this is a static layer (not intended for high-output activity where perspiration is a factor) the benefits of water resistance didn't outweigh the loft and efficiency of premium, untreated down.

Probably the best warmth for weight for value for quality jacket on the global market. Quality materials and finish, loft of ~3cm plus, very impressive warmth for 205 grams. This replaces a bundle of old down and synthetic puffy’s as the go-to jacket for all seasons. Thanks for a fantastic, well designed and sharply priced jacket. We bought a second one the same day ours arrived.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks for the kind words Simon, those were exactly the points we were trying to hit when we designed this.

I bought two off these jackets - one for my son and one for me. They are super lightweight, well made, warm and size as per their description. I’ll need to slim down a little to get mine to fit me well, but that’s my issue and not a design or sizing issue. Many thanks for manufacturing such great jackets at such a reasonable price for lightweight backpacking community. Awesome work.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks for the support Rob. Awesome to hear both you and your son now have one :) Enjoy!

Should have went with the XXL. This is a really nice jacket, it took 4 months but worth it for the even better price. The only complaint is size and zipper. I believe it is referred to as a "european cut". It runs small in the chest and the zipper is backwards. Having worn a motorcycle jacket with the zipper backwards has posed issues when wearing gloves. I think this is NEVE's intro to the US market. I normally fit XL but will fit a L depending on fit. I ordered a XL and it is tight in the chest with a heavy base and mid layer. With just a t-shirt it is still snug. Weight was 217g/7.7#s.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Excellent in every way except size. It is 10cm/4” smaller in girth than other garments of the same size.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Incredibly light and warm. Looking forward to getting it out on the next snowshoe trip.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

I like the jacket quite a bit. However, I ordered an XL but it seems the sizes run one size smaller than in the US. I'm 6'2 and not overweight and fits very slim.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Great quality for the price!!! I am so glad I bought it and I will continue to support this company. My gf is waiting on hers to ship :)

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

I have to give it 3 stars because I can’t wear it. I pre-ordered a 2XL because that’s my normal size for just about every jacket, and couldn’t get the zipper halves within 8” of each other. The size chart on the website gave the 2XL chest size as 43.3”-44.5”, if that info had been available when I pre-ordered I never would have. So I’m a little disappointed about that because none of the YouTubers who had pre-production samples had anything bad to say about the Barrington. Make one for 52-53” chest sizes and I’ll buy it! For now I’m looking for a similar jacket by another brand.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Perfect jacket for backpacking. It’s warm and super light definitely my new go to jacket. For anyone wondering it’s just as warm as the EE torrid.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

This is a phenomenal piece of UL gear for the money, and it was 100% worth the wait for the pre-order. The warmth level is spot-on as stop insulation for 3 season hiking conditions in New England, and the jacket itself is unbelievably light. It packs down as well as you'd expect as well. Sizing runs pretty close to Decathlon sizing, so my fellow Americans should probably read the size chart carefully and go a size up from your normal US size like I did. Especially if you want this to fit over both a sun hoodie and an alpha 90 hoodie.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

I know from the Reddit you’re switching to a draw string waist from the elastic waist mine has. That’s my only gripe but I still love the jacket. It’ll be a perfect camp layer for hiking.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Brilliant jacket - as described. Well designed, warm, and lightweight. Loft is great, and overall a phenomenal jacket for the price. It's a slim fit - I'm 6 foot 1, 80kg, and a Large fits me well, but only just. I usually wear Large for other outdoors brands - and this feels slightly smaller than my other down jackets. Also note that the length is hip height - so it feels shorter than other down jackets. If you want a looser fit or a longer length, you could consider sizing up.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

I have a bunch of down jackets and I was skeptical with this and the unknown. When it arrived and I tried it on…I immediately ordered another one! Now I have one for around town and one for my Sprinter Van adventures and will get more rugged wear and tear. I’m 6’2 and 200lbs and it fits me perfectly. Thanks NEVE Gear!

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

My jacket arrived today. I am really pumped! The quality is excellent and I am excited for the weather to cool off enough to try it outside. I am 5’7” and 165 lbs. I normally wear a size medium and this is true to size and just right. It is large enough to wear a light fleece underneath. The hood is also just right and I love the zippered pockets. I have no issue with the elastic waist and cuffs. I own other garments that are 7 denier and with a little care I have had no issues. Throw a shell over it if you are worried. I agree that you should size up if you are between sizes. This jacket will replace a Patagonia alpine 1/4 zip that is very light but has no hood or pockets. I would love to see future versions be longer, cut slightly larger and make a pocket zipper double sided for pocket storage. Thanks Neve Gear!

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

my jacket fits me good. seems well made and warm. lofts up good. obviously you will want to protect the 7d fabric but used right it will serve you well. Happy with the jacket.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Great Jacket! Is it designed to be packable in its own pocket or hood? Can it damage the jacket somehow?

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Hey Fredrik, you can absolutely put it into its own hood and own pocket. While not specifically designed for it (there's no two way zipper for the pocket to fully close the zip), you definitely won't damage the hoody doing this.

Can't wait to find some cold weather for it! Feels so incredibly warm despite it packing down and weighing virtually nothing.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Glad to hear it Greg, hopefully it keeps you toasty warm for your next cold trip.

Sizing is probably a bit small, would definitely size up, I think the website photo showing 189cm man wearing a large is definitely misleading. I am a very slim build 175cm and was debating on a S or M from the sizing chart and went with the medium and it is quite tight around the waist which compresses the baffles so won’t be very insulating in this area. Otherwise quality is good and very lightweight and packable.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Hey Adrian, Sorry to hear the jacket isn’t fitting quite right. You’re more than welcome to exchange it for a larger size. In regards to Tom wearing a Large, that genuinely is the size he wears. We definitely weren’t trying to mislead anyone there, so apologies if it came across that way. We’ll be slightly increasing the sizing in future production runs to bring the fit more in line with a regular fit throughout. We’ll make sure the sizing information on the website is updated as soon as those changes come through as well. Sorry again that the fit wasn’t quite right for you, mate. Hopefully sizing up works much better!

Very impressed on first assessment. Would have liked a stuff sack to go with it.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks Simon :)

Super light, comfortable and warm. Looking forward to truly testing it in cooler weather hikes

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks Chris. Too hot for us to use it here in Aus at the moment, but hopefully you find somewhere nice and cold to test it.

Impressively light AND warm - can't comment on longevity yet but first impressions are positive

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks Brenton! FWIW, we've had early testers use it on huge chunks of the PCT (even while hiking) and the jacket was still in great undamaged condition. Should last you a long time :)

A fantastic jacket. Super warm. Weight is within one gram of the specified weight. The hood works really well with a peak hat, or cinched in tight around the face. The zip could be improved by the addition of a draft flap.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks for the kind words Richard, glad you're liking the jacket! We thought the zipper draft flap for an ultralight jacket of this temp range wasn't super necessary. That's something we'll use for our warmer puffies in the future :)

Super happy with this jacket. After buying a waratah quilt and loving it I pre-ordered the Barrington jacket and I cant believe how light, warm and comfortable it is. No gimmicky features, only what you need 👌

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Awesome Luke, stoked to hear it.

super light and very warm

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks Ron. That's honestly the goal for all our products now, super light and very warm hahah.

The only issue I see being is the zip. I'm thinking it won't last terribly long, also easy to snag on material.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Hey Greg, thanks for the feedback! The #3 YKK coil zip is pretty standard across a lot of ultralight down jackets and generally works really well. We’ve had some of our early testers hike large sections of the PCT with the jacket and haven’t had any issues with the zip so far. Something like a #5 zip would definitely be more durable long term, but with ultralight gear there’s always a bit of a trade-off between weight and durability. For this jacket, we felt the #3 struck the right balance.

As it's new, just a first impression. Quality seems good, No loose threads or protruding down. Nice and warm around the house at 9 deg in Tas. Only concern, in the long run, is the zip / material interface at the chin area. Time will tell. Warmer than my Mont Zero at half the price.

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Hey Mark, glad to hear you're happy with the down jacket and are finding it plenty warm!

I received my jacket earlier this week and it hasn’t been anywhere near cold enough to try it out yet, but it looks and feels amazing. It’s incredibly light, and the fit for me is perfect. I’m very glad I sized up from an L to an XL for a little extra room. I bought this jacket to replace my Montbell Plasma 1000 Down Jacket, because I wanted something comparably light but with a hood. This will do the job perfectly!

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Hey Oz, thanks for the kind words! Glad to hear you're happy with the jacket and the fit. Keen for you to take it out on some colder trips.

Really nice jacket and build quality! It was definitely worth the wait! Is it designed to be packable in its own pocket, or hoodie?

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks Fredrik, and thank you for your patience with waiting!

crazy lightweight, but nervous about durability, the material is so thin!!!!!

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Hey Jameson, thanks for the review. 7D is definitely some super thin stuff, but also surprisingly durable! Our early testers have hiked big chunks of the PCT in the down jacket without any issues. So it may feel quite light, but it really should hold up quite well.

Looks great, very warm, lightweight and packable. Although zippers aren't YKK and feel a bit flimsy EDIT: I was wrong about the YKK zipper

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Hey Kenny, glad to hear you’re liking the Barrington and finding it nice and warm! As for the zipper, we do use a standard #3 YKK coil zipper, which is the same type used by a lot of other outdoor brands, including Arc’teryx. I’m not sure what gave the impression that they weren’t YKK, but I’m happy to clarify anything there! In regards to picking something burlier, we chose a #3 zipper over a #5 primarily to save weight, and through our testing we’ve found it to be more than durable enough for both static and active use. Some of our early testers have even worn the Barrington while hiking large sections of the PCT without experiencing any zipper issues. Hope that helps!

Wait was totally worth it. Crazy lightweight. Perfect sizing. Just wish it arrived in August. Won't get to use it till next winter. Well done Neve 👊🏼

Barrington Down Hoody Men's

Store owner replied: Thanks so much for your patience, and apologies for the delay in getting it out to you. Hopefully you'll be able to find some trips to take it out on before next winter!
