ABOUT
Using the same attention to detail that has made our Waratah Quilts so well renowned, we've created the Bandicoot Sleeping Bag: an ultralight, feature-rich sleep system designed for everyone from weekend adventurers to dedicated thru-hikers.
Combining premium 850FP RDS-certified duck down with ultralight 10D taffeta shell fabrics, the Bandicoot delivers exceptional warmth, comfort, and packability. A full-length zipper allows the bag to open completely into quilt mode, providing unmatched versatility across a wide range of temperatures.
To further enhance comfort, we've given the Bandicoot the familiar spacious fit of our quilts, eliminating the restrictive feel often associated with traditional mummy-style sleeping bags. The result is a sleeping bag that offers the freedom of a quilt with the protection and versatility of a fully enclosed sleep system.

REFINED FIT / WIDE WIDTH
Sleeping bags often get a bad reputation, and in many cases, it's deserved. In the pursuit of shaving every last gram, many manufacturers have adopted aggressively tapered mummy designs that can leave sleepers feeling restricted, claustrophobic, and counting down the hours until morning.
At Neve Gear, we've always believed that the primary purpose of a sleep system is simple: to help you get a great night's sleep. Weight savings are important, but not at the expense of comfort. That's why we approached the Bandicoot's fit differently.
Drawing on years of feedback from our quilt users, we developed a refined shape that eliminates unnecessary dead space without compromising freedom of movement. The result is a sleeping bag that feels noticeably roomier than traditional mummy bags, while still maintaining excellent thermal efficiency. There's enough space to shift positions naturally throughout the night, without feeling like you're fighting against the bag every time you roll over.
The Bandicoot strikes a careful balance between comfort and performance, combining the security and warmth of a sleeping bag with the spacious feel that our Waratah Quilts have become known for. It's a design that feels familiar to quilt users, while offering the protection and versatility of a fully enclosed sleep system when the temperatures drop.
VERSATILITY
A full-length two way zipper allows the Bandicoot to open completely into quilt mode, giving you the flexibility to adapt your sleep system to a wide range of conditions. On warm nights, unzip it fully and use it as a quilt for maximum ventilation and freedom of movement. As temperatures drop, zip it up to create a fully enclosed sleeping bag that helps retain warmth and block drafts. This versatility means you can comfortably use the Bandicoot across multiple seasons and environments, reducing the need for separate sleep systems while ensuring you stay comfortable wherever your adventures take you.
COMFORT TEMPERATURE RATED
Like our quilts, our sleeping bags are rated to a true comfort temperature, not a lower-limit rating presented as real-world performance.
Many sleeping bags on the market are advertised using their limit temperature, which can be misleading if you don’t read the fine print. It’s often only when you take the bag out and use it at that temperature that you realise surviving the night is very different from sleeping comfortably.
We base our comfort ratings on real-world conditions and the way people actually sleep in the backcountry. This means going to bed well fed, well hydrated, warm, and dry, wearing appropriate long-sleeved base layers or Alpha Fuzzies, using a sleeping pad with the right R-value for the conditions, and sleeping inside a tent with the doors closed or a solid inner to help block wind and drafts.
It’s also important to remember that comfort is personal. Factors like age, fitness, circulation, fatigue, and metabolism can all affect how warm or cold you feel. As we age, or when we’re tired and run down, blood flow and heat production can be reduced, making us more susceptible to the cold.
Under the right conditions, our comfort temperature range is designed to reflect a temperature at which you can genuinely sleep comfortably, rather than simply make it through the night.
HOOD DESIGN
A 3D anatomically designed hood provides exceptional comfort and warmth, with the ability to cinch down tightly around your face and neck to create a snug, draft-free seal in cold conditions. When fully tightened, the opening can be reduced to little more than your mouth and nostrils, maximizing heat retention on freezing nights.
As temperatures rise, simply loosen the drawcords and the hood opens into a relaxed, spacious shape that feels far less restrictive than traditional sleeping bag hoods. It's also generously sized to accommodate most large ultralight pillows, ensuring comfort whether you're deep in the backcountry or relaxing at camp.
"TOGA" MODE
Thanks to the Bandicoot's full-length two-way zipper, you're able to engage what we call "Toga Mode." Simply unzip the lower zipper to free your feet, fasten the snap closure at the top of the zip, open the upper zipper slightly, and slip one arm through the zip opening and the other through the hood opening.
Just like that, your sleeping bag transforms into a wearable insulated suit, allowing you to stay warm and comfortable around camp without with warmth levels that would rival the warmest expedition Everest down suits.
Whether you're brewing a morning coffee, watching the sun rise over the mountains, or soaking in a crisp alpine sunset, Toga Mode keeps the warmth with you, so you can spend less time shivering and more time enjoying the moment.
OTHER FEATURES

HOOD CORD
We've intentionally used two different cord types for the hood and neck cinches, making them easy to distinguish by touch. When you're tucked up in your tent on a cold night, you can quickly identify and adjust the correct cord without needing to turn on a headlamp. It's a small detail, but one that makes fine-tuning comfort and warmth significantly easier.

HANG LOOPS
We've strategically placed multiple hang loops throughout the Bandicoot to make airing and drying as easy as possible. Whether you've woken up to a condensation-soaked tent or a dew-covered cowboy camp, these loops give you plenty of options for hanging your sleeping bag up and letting it dry properly.
Our favourite method is to fully unzip the Bandicoot into quilt mode and hang it completely open using the various hang loops. By exposing the entire shell and lining to the air, moisture can escape far more quickly than if the bag is left bunched up over a bush or draped over a branch. It's a simple feature that helps your sleeping bag dry faster, loft back up sooner, and stay performing at its best throughout extended trips.

YKK ANTI-SNAG SLIDER
The Bandicoot features YKK's Anti-Snag zipper slider cover, designed to eliminate one of the most common frustrations with sleeping bags: snagged zippers.
By helping guide fabric away from the zipper as it moves, the Anti-Snag slider makes getting in and out of the sleeping bag quick and hassle-free. It's particularly appreciated in the middle of the night, whether you're climbing in after a long day on the trail or making a sleepy bathroom trip in the dark. The last thing anyone wants at 2am is to be wrestling with a jammed zipper while cold air pours into their sleeping bag.

3D SHAPED FOOTBOX
Our anatomically shaped 3D footbox is designed to let your feet rest in a natural, relaxed position throughout the night. Rather than forcing your feet together, it provides enough width and height for them to splay out comfortably, just as they would when sleeping naturally.

BOXED BAFFLED
A box-baffled, or box-wall, sleeping bag uses three-dimensional internal mesh walls to separate the outer shell from the inner lining. This creates individual chambers for the down, allowing it to loft fully without being compressed by direct stitching between the layers. By eliminating those stitched-through seams, box baffle construction helps prevent cold spots, improves heat retention, and delivers more consistent warmth throughout the bag.

EFFICIENT DOWN DISTRIBUTION
We’ve carefully distributed the down throughout the sleeping bag, with extra insulation placed in areas more prone to heat loss. More down is concentrated on the top of the bag, where warmth is most needed, while slightly less is used underneath, where the insulation is naturally compressed by body weight. This creates an efficient 55/45 top-to-bottom split, reducing unnecessary bulk without compromising warmth. The footbox is also intentionally overfilled, because cold feet are often one of the first things to disrupt a comfortable night’s sleep.
FAQ
Which one should I pick? Quilt or Sleeping Bag?
Quilt vs Sleeping Bag
Ah yes, the age-old question: should you choose a quilt or a sleeping bag?
The short answer is simple. If you're willing to spend a little extra time setting up pad straps, a quilt will generally provide the best warmth-to-weight performance. If you'd rather have a complete sleep system that you can simply climb into, zip up, and go to sleep, then a sleeping bag is likely the better choice.
The longer answer comes down to a few key differences.
Tossing and Turning
Down only insulates when it is lofted. Once compressed, it provides very little warmth.
With a quilt that is properly secured using pad straps, the insulation remains centred over your body regardless of how much you move during the night. When you roll from side to side, your body moves underneath the quilt while the quilt itself stays in place. This means the lofted insulation remains exactly where it should be, and compressed insulation is never exposed to the cold.
A sleeping bag works differently. Because the bag is wrapped around you, it naturally rotates with your body as you move. When you roll onto your side, some of the compressed insulation underneath you can become exposed to the colder side of the bag. While that insulation will eventually re-loft and regain its insulating properties, there can be a brief period where you lose a small amount of warmth.
For people who are constantly changing positions throughout the night, a quilt can therefore be the more thermally efficient option. The trade-off is that it requires a little more setup and attention to get the most out of it.
Variable Girth and Layering
While the Bandicoot offers a generously spacious fit, quilts still have the advantage when it comes to adjustability.
Using adjustable pad straps, a quilt's effective girth can be increased or decreased to suit both your body size and the conditions. This allows users to fine-tune the fit far more precisely than any fixed-width sleeping bag. On warmer nights, the quilt can be opened up for extra space and ventilation. On colder nights, it can be drawn in closer to reduce drafts and improve thermal efficiency.
This adjustability also makes quilts exceptionally versatile for layering. If you wear a large down jacket inside a sleep system that is too tight, both the jacket and the sleep system can compress each other's insulation, reducing the warmth of both. A sufficiently wide quilt avoids this problem by allowing additional insulation layers to loft fully underneath it.
For users who enjoy experimenting with clothing systems to extend the temperature range of their sleep setup, a quilt offers unmatched flexibility.
That said, we've designed the Bandicoot with a carefully considered fit that balances thermal efficiency with comfort. It provides enough room for natural movement and light layering, with plenty of space for garments such as our Barrington Down Hoody without feeling restrictive. Any more than that and you'd be pushing the limits of Bag's width, and you may run the risk of reducing the overall CLO (warmth) value of both your sleeping bag and your layers.
Ease of Setup
This is where sleeping bags shine.
With a sleeping bag, setup is virtually non-existent. Roll out your pad, climb in, zip up, and you're ready for bed.
Quilts require a little more involvement. Pad straps need to be positioned correctly, tensioned appropriately, and adjusted to achieve the desired girth. While this quickly becomes second nature for experienced quilt users, it is undeniably more effort than simply using a sleeping bag.
For many people, this convenience is the deciding factor. At the end of a long day on the trail, there is something appealing about having a sleep system that simply works with minimal thought or adjustment.
Hood
One of the biggest differences between a quilt and a sleeping bag is what happens above your shoulders.
Quilts do not have hoods, which means you'll need a separate system to keep your head warm. For some people, that might be as simple as a beanie. In colder conditions, it often means adding a down balaclava or hood to achieve the same level of insulation.
A sleeping bag integrates everything into a single system. The hood works seamlessly with the rest of the bag, creating a warm, enclosed environment around your head and neck. There's also a noticeable comfort factor that comes from being fully cocooned inside the bag, with warmth from your body naturally rising into the hood throughout the night.
For cold sleepers and those who value simplicity, a well-designed sleeping bag hood can be a significant advantage.
So Which One Should You Choose?
If maximum warmth-to-weight efficiency, adjustability, and layering flexibility are your priorities, a quilt remains hard to beat.
If you value simplicity, convenience, integrated head insulation, and an all-in-one sleep system that requires virtually no setup, the Bandicoot Sleeping Bag is likely the better choice.
Both systems are highly capable. The best option simply comes down to how you prefer to sleep and camp.
What size/length to get?
If you’re between sizes, we recommend sizing up. A sleeping bag that’s too short can compress the down around your feet, shoulders, or hood, which can reduce loft and create cold spots.
Our height recommendations are based on real usable length. When the hood is cinched down (cinching the hood down reduces the overall height of the sleeping bag), the sleeping bag still fits the stated maximum user height properly, so you can choose your size with confidence.
Is this a Unisex fit?
Yes. The Bandicoot Sleeping Bag has been generously sized to comfortably suit a wide range of body shapes across both men’s and women’s proportions.
How warm of a Sleeping Pad do I need?
A sleeping pad is a critical part of an effective backcountry sleep system. It helps trap the heat your body creates and reduces cold transfer from the ground.
Pad warmth is measured by R-value, which is especially important when using a quilt, as your back relies on the pad for insulation.
Recommended R-values:
Above 5°C: R3
Around 0°C: R4
Below -5°C: R5 or higher
Sleeping pad R-values are additive, meaning you can combine pads for extra warmth. For example, an R3 inflatable pad paired with an R2 foam pad creates an R5 sleep system.
With that being said, R-value doesn’t always tell the full story in real-world conditions. Some sleeping pads are known to perform colder than their advertised rating due to design flaws, construction, or heat loss around the edges.
We always recommend doing your own research and choosing a pad that is proven to perform true to its rating. For inflatable pads, our personal recommendations are the Sea to Summit Ether Light range, Nemo Tensor range, and Therm-a-Rest X range.
Do we use a differential cut?
Yes, we do.
But first, what is a differential cut?
A differential cut means the inner liner of a sleeping bag is cut to a smaller circumference than the outer shell. This creates extra space in the outer fabric, allowing the insulation to loft fully without being compressed against your body.
When you're sleeping, areas such as your shoulders, elbows, knees, and hips push against the bag. Without a differential cut, these pressure points can compress the insulation, reducing its loft and creating cold spots where valuable warmth is lost.
That's why we've incorporated a carefully calculated differential cut in key areas of our sleeping bags. It allows the insulation to maintain its loft where it matters most, improving thermal efficiency while avoiding unnecessary material and weight.
What is Fill Power?
Fill power measures the fluffiness and insulation quality of down, indicating how many cubic inches one ounce of down occupies. A higher number means larger, better-quality clusters that trap more heat while being lighter and more compressible.
The Bandicoot uses 850FP duck down, giving it an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio while still packing down small for backcountry trips.
Responsibly Sourced Down?
Like many of our customers, we care deeply about the impact our products have on the environment and the animals involved in their production. That’s why we source our down only from RDS-certified suppliers.
The Responsible Down Standard helps ensure that the down and feathers used in our products come from ducks and geese raised in accordance with strict animal welfare principles. This includes no live plucking, with down collected only as a by-product of the food industry.
Hydrophobic Down?
The Bandicoot does not use hydrophobic down. Through our testing, we've found that there is a marginal increase in performance with hydrophobic down (at an added cost) versus untreated down when it comes to real world testing.
As hydrophobic down technology continues to evolve, we’ll keep assessing its performance and consider incorporating it into future products where it delivers a clear, real-world advantage.
PFC and PFAS free?
Because we don’t use DWR-treated down, the down in our sleeping bags is completely PFC and PFAS free. The DWR finish used on our outer shell fabric is also PFC and PFAS free.
Pillow compatible hood?
Yes! Our hoods are designed to fit fairly large pillows. You will lose the ability to use the hood to insulate your head, but it can be a great way to keep your pillow securely in place on warmer nights.
A pillow around 45 x 33 x 15 cm will fit nicely.
Will cold air come in through the zipper?
A zipper doesn’t provide insulation on its own, which is why we’ve added a generous draft tube running the full length of the zip. It’s carefully positioned to sit behind the zipper, helping block cold air from entering while keeping warm air inside the bag.
